Director, Arts Disciplines Division

The Canada Council for the Arts is Canada’s national arts funding agency providing grants, payments and awards to thousands of artists and arts organizations across the country.  Its mandate is to support the study, enjoyment and production of works in the arts.  The Arts Disciplines Division is responsible for the Canada Council’s core business – the provision of grants to Canadian professional artists and arts organizations, in a wide variety of artistic disciplines and practices. It is within this important context that the organization is seeking to recruit a Director, Arts Disciplines Division.

As a member of the Council’s Executive Management Group, the Director, Arts Disciplines Division, provides corporate leadership in developing and implementing an integrated approach to the artistic disciplines supported by the Council; overseeing the planning, development and delivery of effective programming in the disciplines of Dance, Media Arts, Music, Theatre, Visual Arts, and Writing and Publishing, as well as cross-disciplinary strategies in Inter-Arts, Audience and Market Development, Arts Services Unit and the Public Lending Right Program; advising the Director & CEO of the Canada Council on all arts discipline issues; providing a discipline lens for the planning and establishment of program strategies, approaches, and initiatives, as well as partnerships with a broad range of stakeholders including discipline communities and other arts funders.

As the ideal candidate, you possess a master’s degree (or its equivalent) from a recognized university combined with extensive senior leadership experience.  Knowledge of professional arts practice in Canada and internationally and in-depth experience in at least one discipline is essential for this position. Your established network of relationships in the arts sector and dynamic reputation in the broader community will serve you well in this role, combined with excellent interpersonal, communication and team-building skills. You have the ability to motivate diverse groups of stakeholders by successfully delivering the vision and objectives of the Council, and a high level of cultural and political sensitivity through experience with diverse cultures.

Bilingualism in English and French is essential.This position is located in the City of Ottawa and requires frequent travel.
