Curator, Public Programs

Position type: Regular 35 hours/week, evenings and weekends as required

DESCRIPTION:
InterAccess seeks a motivated arts professional to step into the role of Curator, Public Programs.

Established in 1983, InterAccess has a mandate to present new media art by local, national and international artists. Currently the program promotes experimentation with conceptual models and contexts for visual art that have allowed the program to expand beyond gallery exhibitions to include cross-disciplinary works, site-specific and Internet projects, and co-productions. As the Curator, Public Programs, the successful candidate will utilize their experience and initiative to direct the organization’s exhibition and programming activities. This will involve the production of publications, marketing and development initiatives.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Curator, Public Programs reports to the Executive Director, and is responsible for:

  • Developing and communicating a dynamic vision for the Exhibitions Program and actively raising the profile of the gallery locally and internationally;
  • Managing the coordination of exhibitions and special projects; including the coordination of submission review process, generating curatorial proposals, negotiating and managing all contracts, project budgets, research and studio visits, and writing and editing curatorial texts;
  • Coordinating all travel, shipping, insurance and equipment needs, and overseeing installation;
  • Coordinating all publicity; including writing press releases, preparing press packages, liaising with the media, managing press and mailing databases;
  • Coordinating all gallery marketing and design;
  • Managing all gallery publications including documentation, gallery website and archive, hand-outs and other materials;
  • Overseeing general maintenance of the gallery space and equipment;
  • Assisting the Executive Director by tracking and monitoring budget components related to program expenditures and attendance, and preparing programming texts for various funding applications and sponsorship packages;
  • Assisting in monitoring strategic and development plans; reporting to the Executive Director and the Board;
  • Preparing monthly programming reports;
  • Managing support staff, co-op students and volunteers;
  • Acting as a spokesperson for the organization to government, funders, the media, members and the public.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • BA/BFA required, MA/MFA preferred (equivalents accepted)
  • A minimum of 3 years experience in a public gallery or equivalent
  • Understanding of contemporary art practices
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English (Knowledge of French or a second language an asset)
  • Strong organizational skills; detail oriented
  • High degree of self-direction and initiative with strong time management abilities
  • Ability to provide direction and work with a diverse staff, board and membership
  • Knowledge of managing publications and print projects (Graphic design experience an asset)
  • Experience installing a variety of art exhibitions
  • Experience presenting new media art

TECHNICAL QUALIFICATIONS:
In your role, you will be exposed to a variety of tools and technologies. A technician and skilled volunteers support gallery activities. Additionally, on-site training is provided. The following would be considered assets:

  • Good working knowledge of web languages: HTML, CSS, and JavaScript (PHP an asset)
  • Experience with MySQL and FTP programs; knowledge of common CMS systems
  • Knowledge of Internet Protocols, setting up local networks, setting up Internet connections for artworks
  • Working knowledge of common programs such as Arduino, Processing, Pure Data, and Max/MSP
  • Advanced experience in Mac OSX and Windows (Linux an asset)
  • Experience with Adobe CS
  • Understanding of video codecs, resolutions, and projector/monitor requirements.
  • Knowledge of Final Cut Pro, FFMPEG
  • Experience installing and routing cabling
  • Basic understanding of electronics and electronic fabrication
  • Basic construction and fabrication abilities
  • Experience working with sound and P.A. systems
