Interim Music Officer

The Ontario Arts Council is a publicly funded agency of Ontario’s Ministry of Heritage, Sport, Tourism, and Culture Industries. OAC’s primary purpose is to award grants to professional artists and arts organizations.

The Ontario Arts Council (OAC) requires an accomplished arts administrator with broad knowledge of many music forms and practices, and direct experience in hip-hop, world music and/or Indigenous practices, to support the advancement of the field through OAC’s granting programs. Your leadership, combined with an innovative and thoughtful approach regarding the diversity and various needs of Ontario’s music communities and organizations, enables you to act as a critical link between them and the OAC. 

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the administration of music grant programs
  • Utilize expertise and knowledge of non-western music art forms and the presentation and production of such art forms throughout the grant application lifecycle
  • Provide information and consultative advice to artists, arts organizations and presenters/producers
  • Conduct outreach and development to increase access to, and awareness of, OAC and its programs
  • Facilitate the peer assessment review process of grant requests
  • Write reports and present grant recommendations to senior management and the board of directors
  • Contribute to the development of policies, programs, strategies and services that will best support OAC’s commitment to music
  • Manage program and office budgets, office workflow and supervise support staff
  • Keep current on the state of the field by connecting with artists, arts organizations and presenters/producers through attending events on evenings and weekends and traveling throughout Ontario

Key Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of progressively more senior arts administration experience working in music, typically in roles of general manager or artistic director of an arts organization or in a program management position with a public funder  
  • A broad understanding of trends and issues in the music field in Ontario
  • Direct experience in hip-hop, world music and/or Indigenous practices, and knowledge of trends and issues in these areas of practice
  • Experienced and knowledgeable in grant writing and public funding systems
  • Sound project planning, organizational and administrative skills, backed by solid judgment and the ability to problem-solve and multi-task
  • Demonstrated effective interpersonal, consultative, facilitation and presentation skills
  • Practical financial knowledge and direct experience with operating and project budgets
  • Effective verbal and written English communication skills
  • Proficiency in French and ASL is an asset
  • Proven ability to provide direction and leadership in the development and implementation of strategies, programs and initiatives
  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse set of individuals internally and externally
  • Understanding of how OAC priority groups (Indigenous, people of colour, Deaf and disabled, Francophone, regional and new generation) are represented in music
  • Intermediate to advanced computer proficiency in MS Office 365, and database programs
  • Ability to work overtime on evenings and weekends, and ability to travel, as required
