Popular and World Music Officer

The Ontario Arts Council is a publicly funded agency of Ontario’s Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport. OAC’s primary purpose is to award grants to professional artists and arts organizations.

Salary Range: $65,770 - $98,654

Level: Unionized Position, Classification 7

Location: Toronto

 

The Ontario Arts Council (OAC) requires an accomplished music professional with broad knowledge of all music forms and practices, in particular popular and world music to support the advancement of the field through OAC’s granting programs. Your leadership, combined with an innovative and thoughtful approach regarding the diverse needs of Ontario’s music communities, enables you to act as a critical link between them and the OAC. 

 

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the Popular and World Music genres and administration of associated grant programs within the Music Office, and other music forms and granting programs as required;
  • Provide information and consultative advice to artists, arts organizations and presenters/producers;
  • Conduct outreach and development to increase access to, and awareness of, OAC and its programs;
  • Facilitate the peer assessment of grant requests;
  • Write reports and present grant recommendations to Senior Management and the Board of Directors;
  • Research and contribute to the development of policies, programs, strategies and services that will best support OAC’s commitment to music;
  • Manage program and office budgets, office workflow and supervise staff;
  • Attend events on evenings and weekends and travel throughout Ontario to meet with artists, arts organizations and presenters/producers;

 

Summary of Key Qualifications:

  • 5 – 7 years of progressive administrative experience working in music;
  • A broad understanding of the music field in Ontario, in particular popular and world music trends and issues;
  • Experienced and knowledgeable in grant writing and public funding systems;
  • Proven ability to provide direction and leadership in the development and implementation of strategies, programs and initiatives;
  • Sound project planning, organizational and administrative skills, backed by judgment and the ability to problem-solve and multi-task;
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills;
  • Demonstrated effective interpersonal, consultative, facilitation and presentation skills;
  • Practical financial knowledge and experience with operating and project budgets;
  • Understanding of how Ontario’s Aboriginal, culturally diverse, Deaf and disabled, Francophone, regional and new generation voices are represented in music;
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse set of individuals internally and externally;
  • Intermediate to advanced computer proficiency in Excel, Word, Outlook and database programs;
  • Ability to work overtime evenings, weekends and travel;
  • Proficiency in French is an asset.
