Director, Talent Development Programs

The Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television is the largest non-profit professional arts organization in Canada. The Canadian Academy is seeking a Director of Talent Development Programs to lead the execution of our organization’s filmmaker and talent programs, including the Directors Program for Women, the MVP Project, and other initiatives to be announced. Reporting to the Vice President of Programming & Awards, and with the support of a Programming Assistant, the Director of Talent Development Programs will oversee the development, administration, and execution of these programs, positioning each within the Academy’s mission and mandate to inspire creativity, develop talent, and celebrate the best in Canadian visual storytelling.

 

First and foremost, this position requires an individual who has a passion for diversifying the voices telling Canadian stories. Crucially, this position requires an understanding of the Canadian media sector and the development process for bringing stories to life in at least one of these media: film, television, immersive projects or gaming. Given that most of our programs are fairly new, we are looking for an individual who excels at taking initiative, setting priorities, and meeting tight deadlines. This position favours an individual who is a curious and enthusiastic networker with a knack for matchmaking.

 

This position is a member of the senior leadership team at the Canadian Academy and will represent the organization in communication with our membership and partners, as well as program participants, jurors/committee members, and the Canadian film, television, and digital media industries at large.

 

Specific responsibilities will include:

 

  • Developing and executing critical paths, objectives and budgets for each of the programs;
  • Manage day to day operations of each program including outreach, calls for submissions, review of applications, organization of selection committees, and announcement of program participants
  • Writing and coordinating distribution of communication materials for multiple purposes (i.e. call for submissions, committee member invites, etc.);
  • Proactively developing relationships with industry partners, and building partnerships as they relate to the talent/filmmaker programs
  • Researching potential topics and guest speakers for Google/video hangouts and coordinate booking dates and times with program participants;
  • Liaise with Academy office in Montreal regarding French-speaking apprentices;
  • Liaise with program participants and production companies, producers and/or directors throughout program;
  • Implementing and maintaining relationships with third party partners and vendors such as audio/visual technical staff, event production teams and catering services;
  • Liaise with Partnership team to ensure programming meets contract requirements;
  • Construct and compile survey results from program participants;
  • Reporting and updating staff as needed, including writing a fulsome final report upon each programs conclusion;

 

Qualifications:

 

  • Possess an understanding and dedication to equality and inclusion and work with the Academy’s principles of Integrity, Diversity, Excellence, and Authenticity as it relates to all programming initiatives
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment;
  • Ability to work independently, as well as a team player, and is a multi-tasker and self-motivated;
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word & Excel) and Google Suite Proficiency in or a quick learner of other cloud platforms such as Salesforce
  • Accuracy and attention to detail are crucial to ensure the integrity of the submission and selection processes;
  • Experience working with sensitive documents and confidential information and ability to maintain confidentiality;
  • Post-secondary education or experience in the field of media arts or arts administration will be expected;
  • Ability to draft business correspondence emails
  • Friendly and Professional - Customer service experience is an asset;
  • Available to work flexible hours on evenings and weekends, and available after-hours for questions/inquiries;
  • 5+ years experience in project management;
  • Knowledge of Canadian Screen industry (including television, film, immersive and/or gaming);
  • Ability to problem solve and adapt
  • Written and verbal fluency in a French language considered an asset

Office hours are Mondays to Fridays, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM (or 9:30 AM to 5:30 PM). A commitment of 40 hours/week is required. Evening work will be required for special events throughout the year and during Canadian Screen Week. Academy staff is currently working remotely. A plan to return to the office is currently in the works.

 

COMPENSATION: Commensurate with experience. The Canadian Academy offers health insurance at no cost to the employee, and a generous RRSP matching program. This position comes with four weeks of paid vacation.
