Posting No. 063
The City of Saskatoon is an Employment Equity employer.
ORGANIZATIONAL PROFILE - THE REMAI ART GALLERY OF SASKATCHEWAN:
Due to open to the public in 2016 the Remai Art Gallery of Saskatchewan is one of the most visionary new art museum developments in North America. Located at River Landing in the south downtown of Saskatoon, the Remai Art Gallery of Saskatchewan will be an architectural centerpiece for the city and will complement the landscape of the South Saskatchewan River valley. Designed by the renowned Canadian architectural firm, KPMB, it will be a striking building from the outside and will offer equally striking views from within the building. Inspired by the local landscape and the rich history of architectural modernism the design won the Canadian Architect magazine's 2011 Award of Excellence for the Gallery's design, well before construction started.
Wrapping around the Persephone Theatre, the new gallery will be the largest in the province and five times the size of Saskatoon's current Mendel Art Gallery. The Remai Art Gallery of Saskatchewan will bring world-class national and international exhibitions of modern and contemporary art to Saskatoon while celebrating Western Canada's contribution to the visual arts. In addition the Gallery will be able to display more of the 7,500 works of art in the Mendel Collection, as well as the $20 million collection of Picasso linocut prints recently donated by the Frank and Ellen Remai Foundation to the Remai Art Gallery of Saskatchewan. The Foundation has also donated a further $30 million to the gallery, $15 million toward the construction cost and $15 million for future programming. The combined donation is amongst the largest to an art gallery in Canadian history.
The new building is supported by all levels of government and, most importantly, by generous donors, including families and corporations. To date $76 million has been pledged toward the cost of construction of the gallery. The gallery will also be served by a $19.5-million underground parkade owned and operated by the City. Construction began in April 2013, while the gallery's first Executive Director and CEO commenced duties the following month. A visioning and brand development process is currently being completed, with the aim of establishing the gallery as a direction-setting art museum in North America.
