Coordinator of Interpretation and Educational Programs

28 hours per week, September – June
Rate of pay: 17 - 21$/hour

Description: Ottawa Art Gallery (OAG) is seeking a highly motivated, innovative, and collaboratively-minded individual to join the OAG team as Coordinator of Interpretation and Educational Programs. This position reports to the Curator of Public Engagement and is offered during the school year only, from September to June. Working 28 hours per week, the coordinator will be responsible for organizing all aspects of OAG’s educational and school programs, as well as coordinating gallery interpretive and educational materials. In addition to managing existing programs, the coordinator will contribute to researching and writing educational project grants, and developing expanded academic, educational, and research opportunities at OAG. The coordinator will occasionally be required to work evenings and on weekends.

Responsibilities:

  • Track spending and manage budgets for all educational and school programs;
  • Collaborate with Curator of Public Engagement and exhibition curators to identify key exhibition themes and develop curriculum-linked tours and activities for elementary and high school groups;
  • Develop exhibition- and collection-related academic engagement opportunities for university groups and professors from regional colleges and universities;
  • Contribute to researching, writing, and reporting educational project grants;
  • Build positive relationships with teachers and regional school boards in Ontario and Quebec;
  • Foster academic partnership opportunities with regional colleges and Universities in Ontario and Quebec;
  • Contribute to planning and growth of OAG’s educational programs in the new building;
  • Oversee training of freelance gallery educators;
  • Manage school tour bookings and booking for A. Y. Jackson bus tours;
  • Coordinate gallery educator shift schedules;
  • Manage incoming registrations for the Articulation critical art writing series;
  • Liaise with Articulation writers and community partners;
  • Manage CARFAC fee payments to writers, as well as expense reimbursements
  • Coordinate studio visits with Articulation writers for local artists;
  • Liaise with the communications department to promote educational programs;
  • Collaborate with the Curator of Public Engagement and exhibition curators to develop special interpretive materials and gallery guides;
  • Collaborate with contract curriculum writers to develop interpretive materials and special educational projects;
  • Create resource materials for gallery educators, teachers and students;
  • Attend team meetings and contribute to the varied events and functions of the Gallery.

The ideal candidate will possess the following knowledge and experience:

  • Post-secondary education in Art Education, Art History, Museum Studies or a related field;
  • Familiarity with Ministry curricula in both Ontario and Quebec;
  • Familiarity with current research and ideas in critical pedagogy;
  • Passion for creating and contributing to educational opportunities that are anti-racist, anti-sexist and democratically based;
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience (volunteer or work) in a public art gallery/museum context;
  • Experience working with volunteers and guiding the activities of interns;
  • An understanding of major Canadian art historical movements and periods;
  • Familiarity with major currents in contemporary art practices;
  • Strong writing skills and the ability to communicate effectively and fluently, orally and in writing, in both French and English;
  • Sensitivity towards diverse lived experiences, perspectives and political realities;
  • Ability to think critically;
  • Confidence facilitating groups, leading meetings, and giving presentations;
  • Attention to detail, strong administrative and organizational skills;
  • Knowledge of online environments, including experience using major communication and social media platforms (e.g. Mailchimp, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc);
  • Positive attitude and collaborative spirit;
  • Photography skills would be an asset;
  • Design skills would be an asset.
