Executive Director

The Electric City Council (EC3) is seeking an energetic, experienced and practice leader for our organization  Reporting directly to the Board of Directors, the EC3 Executive Director will be responsible for the successful leadership and management of the organization according to the strategic directions set by the Board.  The Executive Director is responsible for implementing the strategic plan of the organization, overseeing administration, operations, financial management, programs/services and ensuring that EC3 fulfills its mission and vision.  Other key duties include advocacy, fundraising, marketing, and community outreach.  You will supervise a part-time Program/Administrative Co-coordinator, bookkeeper and from time to time, other contract staff. 

The successful candidate will be highly organized, creative, have a passion for arts, culture and heritage, knowledge of cultural development, policy and planning at the municipal level and an understanding of contemporary issues in the sector.  Knowledge of and experience with the Peterborough community is a definite asset.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Executive Director provides responsible leadership to the organization and works with the Board and staff to ensure that the management and operations of the organization, resource development, programs and services, partnerships and collaborations, marketing and communications are effective and efficient and work well to achieve EC3’s goals and objectives.

Designing, Developing, Delivering and Evaluating Programming and Services:  

The Executive Director works with the board and staff to ensure that the vision and mission of the organization is fulfilled through programs/services and community outreach.  The EC3 Executive Director is:

  • Responsible for the design, development, implementation and evaluation of all EC3 programs and services including project research and management.
  • Responsible for working with the Board on strategic planning to ensure that EC3 can successfully fulfill its vision and mission into the future.
  • Responsible for the enhancement of EC3’s image by being active and visible in the community and by working closely with and developing and maintaining partnerships with other not-for-profit cultural organizations, educational, civic, business organizations and innovative cultural enterprises.

Leadership and Advocacy:

The Executive Director will take a leadership role under the guidance and direction of the Board in creating a profile and a voice for the ACH sector and representing EC3 members in planning and discussions with a wide variety of stakeholders.  Responsibilities may include:

  • Research and the preparation of position papers on critical issues.
  • Representing EC3, its members and the ACH sector at public lectures, talks, consultations and panel discussions.
  • Fostering good relationships with regional media.
  • Developing strong, positive working relationships and collaborations with community partners.

Governance: 

The Executive Director will work with the board in order to fulfill the organization’s vision and mission and ensure effective and efficient board management.  Duties include:

  • Leading EC3 in a manner that supports and guides the organization’s vision and mission as defined by the Board of Directors.
  • Attending and participating in Board meetings as required.
  • Communicating effectively with the Board and providing, in a timely and accurate manner, all information necessary for the Board to function properly and to make informed decisions.
  • Managing the scheduling of and reporting on Board and committee meetings.

Financial Performance and Viability: 

The Executive Director will develop financial resources sufficient to ensure the fiscal health of the organization and manage them effectively. Duties include:

  •  Ensuring the fiscal integrity of EC3, to include submission to the Board of a proposed annual budget, monthly financial statements and quarterly reports that accurately reflect the financial condition/position of the organization.
  • Fiscal management (financial planning, control and reporting) that operates within the Board approved budget and financial policies, ensures maximum resource utilization, and maintenance of the organization in a positive financial position.
  • Ensuring a professional standard of financial record keeping.
  • Developing the revenues and other resources necessary to support EC3’s vision and mission.  This will include writing funding proposals and managing fundraising initiatives alone or with partners.

Operations: 

The Executive Director oversees and implements appropriate resources to ensure that the operations of the organization are effective and efficient.  The Executive Director is:

  • Responsible for the effective administration of EC3 operations including policies, procedures and documentation.
  • Responsible for management of corporate/office systems and infrastructure.
  • Responsible for overseeing the implementation of effective marketing and communications plans. 
  • Leading the development of databases and other systems to track and manage programs/services and operations. 
  • Responsible for the hiring, training, supervision and retention of competent, qualified staff and volunteers.

PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:

Educational:
B.A., BFA or equivalent

Experience:
Proven leadership ability and at least 3 years experience in management and administration of a not-for-profit organization.

Knowledge:

  • Applied knowledge of the non-profit sector, particularly the arts, culture and heritage (ACH) sector in Ontario.
  • Knowledge of cultural policy and cultural development and capacity building in the ACH sector. 
  • Solid, hands-on, financial management skills, including budget planning/audit preparation, analysis, decision-making and reporting.
  • Understanding of good governance practices. 
  • Basic HR skills including staff and volunteer management, training and retention.
  • Basic marketing and communications principles and procedures.
  • Awareness of the models and roles of arts councils in the development of arts and culture.

Skills:

  • Strong organizational abilities including planning, program development/evaluation and project management and report writing.
  • Problem solving, facilitation and team building.
  • Ability to convey a vision of EC3’s strategic future to staff, board, stakeholders, volunteers and donors.
  • Knowledge of fundraising strategies and donor relations unique to the nonprofit sector.
  • Skills to collaborate with and motivate board members and other volunteers, partners and sponsors.
  • Exceptional organizational skills, along with a high level of professionalism and diplomacy.  
  • Adaptability, ability to work in high-pressure situations and to multi-task.
  • Superior written and oral communication skills (strong public speaking ability).
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise and collaborate with staff.
  • Familiarity with software tools including, Word, Adobe, Excel, Word Press, QuickBooks and other social media and design software is an asset.

SALARY:
Salary range: $38,000 - $40,000.
This is a full time position that requires flexible working hours.
