General Manager

THE POSITION
 
Necessary Angel Theatre Company seeks a General Manager to lead the Company under the artistic direction of Jennifer Tarver.
 
In partnership with the Artistic Director, the General Manager works to achieve the mission of Necessary Angel Theatre Company. Reporting directly to the Board of Directors, the General Manager understands and accepts the values of the Company.
 
S/he is responsible for the financial integrity and the sustainability of the Company while ensuring best practices of good governance are adhered to. S/he will work in collaboration with the Artistic Director to foster a culture of openness and collaboration essential to the Company’s mission and to further enhance its longstanding reputation for artistic excellence.
 
The General Manager will, along with the Artistic Director, be identified as the “public face” of the Company.
 
 
RESPONSIBILITIES
                     
Administration/Operations
• Oversee the day-to-day operations of the Company using best practices and initiating systems and procedures to ensure success.
• Oversee the logistical requirements to develop and produce the work of the Company
• Develops and manages the annual operating plans and budgets.
• Through regular communication with the Artistic Director, provide the necessary input to develop and set in motion the long-term artistic plan.
• Hire and manage all staff required to execute the artistic and business plans, including office, technical, and performing talent.
• Manage company communications strategies on all platforms including social media, to maximize public aware of company activities.
• Serve as spokesperson for the Company as required.
• Lead the financial management of the Company.
• Manage the Company’s relationship with its bank.
• Assume responsibility for revenue generation including earned, public, and private.
• Manage all fundraising activities including public, private, and foundation.
• Prepare annual budget and detailed production/project budgets.
• In collaboration with the Artistic Director, prepare and write all grant applications to all appropriate government funding agencies.
• Prepare and execute all relevant contracts to fulfill the company’s plans in accordance with industry standards observing health and labour laws.
• Identify current and potential stakeholders, and through stewardship strengthen relationships.
• Ensure the Company’s operations meet the highest standards at all times.
 
Producing
• Manage the Production process, overseeing the process from budget to realization.
• Identify and create strategic producing partnerships, both domestic and international.
• Develop the company’s international presentation network.
• Identify and assess viability of all touring opportunities.
• Responsible for negotiation of domestic and international theatre production rights of all plays, right through to the artist contract negotiation process.
• Leads the co-production negotiation and contracting process.
 
Board
• In collaboration with the Board, prepare requests for corporate support and oversee fundraising events.
• Deliver regular financial reports at Board meetings, indicating cash flow and forecasts.
• Submit annual budget and production budgets for Board approval.
• Work with the Board of Directors and its Committees to identify the Board’s resources which can be deployed to the benefit of the Company.
 
 
CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS
 
• A demonstrated sense of leadership, vision, collaboration and team building with strong interpersonal skills, integrity, high energy, and creativity.
• Strong finance and administration experience.
• Extensive experience in theatre production.
• An in-depth awareness of theatre activity, both local and national.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• An ability to translate artistic needs and values into institutional strategies and specific operating plans.
• Professional, confident, calm, and tactful approach with a strong ability to deal with a wide variety of people.
• A willingness to take on a range of tasks, from menial to executive.
• Experience in working with and engaging a Board of Directors.
